Slow Computer
For some time now, my computer has been slow!!
My computer is a Dell 8100 Dimension upgraded with a 1.8 g processor and 1.5 g RAM memory with a terabyte+ of storage. It had been running very well for a long time.
After several days of concentrated work, the problem was traced to Spy Sweeper by Webroot. How this program wins awards is beyond my understanding.
Spy Sweeper rendered my computer unuseable! The only way to get work done was to turn off Spy Sweeper which defeats the whole purpose of the software. My solution to the Spy Sweeper problem is to use Ad-Aware and SpyBot instead.
Ad-Aware and SpyBot also offer the advantage of being FREE!!! This is definitely a case of NOT getting what you pay for!!! Too bad because the interface of Spy Sweeper is quite nice and easy to use; unfortunately ease of use resulted in a computer too sloooooowwww to use!!!
On the other hand, here are two outstanding products: PTFButton and PromptPAL. Both programs work exceptionally well! PTFButton, http://www.ptfbpro.com/, removes the annoyance of having to push buttons on many of the numerous Windows' messages to the user. Those routine messages that have no substantial meaning and must be clicked to allow Windows to continue or clear the message from the screen. PromptPAL is a vastly much improved CMD window than what Windows provides. PromptPAL is a joy to use; much much much better than CMD from Windows.
With several days experience using PTFButton, I am even more impressed with the good programming and well thought out UI for the program. It is an outstanding piece of work that works exceptionally well; similar to the old Laplink cable: It does the job very very well without crap that does not need to be present.
One of the absolute best things about PTFButton is that my boot now is totally hands off!!! ALL of the messages from the loading programs as the computer starts up are handled by PTFButton! Since the messages never change, the buttons must be pushed to continue the boot or allow the program to finish loading PTFButton is absolutely the best thing!!! PTFButton loads after the firewall and virus check so it sees all of the windows as they come up during the boot process. Just an outstanding piece of software. Micro$oft could take lessons from the author of PTFButton!! Software that works as advertized and works very very very very well!!!!
Trying to run the latest version of Winamp was a total disaster!! My computer was almost unuseable when Winamp was running. Right this instant my computer is playing the same mp3 file which Winamp was playing when my computer was unuseable. The player is ATI's mp3 player. Two browsers are running, MaxiVista is running two other screens(right and left side) and my main monitor is running, RSSOwl is downloading headlines, Eudora is downloading my mail, and my computer is very very useable!!!! A totally different experience than when running Winamp! Winamp has been DELETED permanently!!!!
